Okay I think I made an earlier post in the wrong place. This will duplicate some of the information in my other post about this game.
My Recommendation: buy it or find someone who has and play right now.
Due to this game I am currently writting this review from work on only 2 hours sleep. That should be enough said but I am sure you will want details.
Players compete to be the most famous in Puerto Rico and due this by best utilizing various roles in the city. Victory points are earned by shipping goods out on trade ships over seas, but to produce these goods players will need plantations and 'factories' to produce the goods, while building support buildings for making money and good production quicker.
Each turn players pick a role (Mayor, Captain, Builder, Etc). The interesting part is that the player who's turn it is picks a role and then all other players get to do the action for that role. The player who picked the role gets a small bonus 'priveledge' for picking it. For example, if the current player picks Mayor - he gets 1 setteler from a stock pile, then each player in turn gets 1 setteler from the colony ship until the ship is exhausted. Once every player has acted on the role the next player choses their role. Roles not chosen in a round get gold placed on them to make them more appealing next time around.
Okay I am going to give up on the summary. I said the game was simple but its obviously hard to describe. Trust me it makes perfect simple sense while you are playing.
The role system is a great system. Each turn trying to decide which role is best and getting 'screwed' when someone else choses the role you wanted is a ton of fun. The variety of roles made it so that there was never a point where I felt I could do nothing.
To summaize - awesome, easy to learn difficult to master.

Welcome to the Forums.
My initial review has not changed, played this about 10 times now and still not at all sick of it.
One neat thing we did find though is the style of game varries greatly depending on who you play with.
We had NightParade over for a game and things played very differently then when playing with Church and MildlyAmusing.

I should retire now, that way I can say that I am undefeated. So what if I only played once.
When it comes to board games at your place I think I might be the undisputed master of beginners luck.

I did have that record in Peurto Rico until you came along Actually for the amount we play some of these games me record isn't too good. I think Pandora has the record in Catan (damn develpment cards)

Didn't you win the second round of Chez Goth the other day?

While I do enjoy winning most of the time I play games jsut to see the interaction of the rules and players.
Although I do win quite a bit when I get to play.
I got Puerto Rico when it was first released and we probrably played it about 20 times or so... and it never got old. There is no "winning strategy" as I've seen multiple angles work in this game.

Finally had my first go at this game and despite playing it AFTER several rounds of camalot and not having slept in 36+ hours I still picked it up very easily and narrowly came in second to Pandora. Another game with a wonderful variability of stratagies either chosen on your own or based off of opponent's play styles.
I'm not sure I really get/appreciate the possibility of lack of resources and how it appropriately works since the players are supposed to be generating the materials from the earth, yet can still run out. but aside from that I would be hard pressed to find any other complaints about it.

Well we could always test the gameplay with unlimited resources. Really thought I think it adds to the play strategy. I have taken Craftsman enough times in the game fully aware that the person with the most victory points will get 'screwed' out of production due to resrouces.

I don't doubt that they have included it in the game for a reason, it just seems odd that in a 'new land' somehow you're running out of natural resources even with full production capabilities.
Unless of course the rules have some justification for this that makes sense...

There is no demand for the goods, so you do not produce them.
Aka there is already so much Indigo either on the market (sitting in other players storage) or already on ships headed to Spain, that there is no point in producing more.

Fair enough.. I can think of a few arguments that just make the idea even more complex, but I think I'll just leave those be because it's not like I've ever actually read the rules or anything.. So I'll just shaddup..

O Puerto Rico!
Ive played Puerto Rico for about 2 years now. A GREAT euro, in my top 3 euro's for sure. This game isn't about laughs though, its about strategy. So though you won't find a group playing it laughing and joking, you will see them play it again -a gamer's game.
The game plays very differently based on the number of players too -you'll find strategies that work great for 3 players very frustrating with 5, so adapt!
Overall a great euro strategy thats stood the test of time and is one of the reigning games of the genre. A must for gamers!
I dont want to hijack this thread so I'll mention it briefly -I bought another euro called 'Caylus' at Hugin & Munin (a Windsor games store) thats equally as good (and all I ve played it with think its BETTER) as Puerto Rico!!! Thats no small feat -if you love Puerto Rico, you'll love Caylus too! I'll be teaching it this Wednesday night at The Coffee Exchange (aug 2nd) for the weekly boardgaming night session. I'll also be teaching this at the next WGR meet at the end of August ;D
