Received the 2nd edition of Runbound as an early Bday gift and finished our first 2 player game today.
Lobo's right on this one, excellent game.
Reminds me of the Classic Talisman where you start off a weak little hero and go around completing adventures, hiring allies, buying equipment and dealing with events until you are big enough to take on the big baddies at the end.
Unlike Talisman (which I still love) this one plays much quicker (well at least feels like it, it's not fast by any streach), has a much less random combat system, looks a ton better, plays better, has more variety (especially with add-ons), better miniatures, etc. Heck it's just better.
Bad bits: this is a slow one. Our first game was about 4 hours, but the next would probably be a bit quicker. Not much though, the game was pretty simple to pick up and play. Steamrolling appeared to be a bit of an issue. Once one player was ahead it seemed pretty hopeless for the other to catch up (this didn't happen really until the endgame, maybe the last 45 minutes at most). Lots of little bits to loose. Invest in some baggies.
Overall very impressed. Had a ton of fun and definately want to play again. Already have a couple of expansions, but holding off to add them until I have gotten more play out of the original game.

How does it compare to:
Return of the Heroes Arkham Horror Descent: Journeys in the Dark Doom World of Warcraft etc.?
I've heard Runebound has little player interaction. How is solitaire?

I'm enjoying it more then World of Warcraft. Haven't played any of those other games so couldn't tell you.
The player interaction is a little low. Actually in both games I have played there was pretty much none. You can get together and trade items and attack other players but it never came up. One of the expansions that changes the adventure you are playing (the goal of the game can be changed with different decks) makes it a co-op game. That sounded appealing.
I haven't tried it solitaire as I hate solitair games, that's what Video games are for IMHO. I would think that if you were into that it would be a pretty good one but it would be very easy to 'cheat'. Plus unless you put some type of time limit on the game you would always win. You would need to set some goal like win in X turns or X hours, as there is no way to actually Die. Perhaps you could play with a number of lives, and each time K.O'ed you would lose one.

There are rules for attacking each other and taking stuff. In most of the games I've played of Runebound it doesn't actually happen very often, but sometimes the threat of it happening is enough to cause things to happen.

Ian, didn't I kill you and steal all your stuff? Or was that Jake? Either way, it was fun heh.
I like this game too, though I found it lost a lot on the second playing. I'm not sure that it has a lot of replay value. Maybe with the expansions...

WTF??? I'v always found that this has lots of reply value?!?! I guess it depends upon what cards come up. If you keep getting the same stuff all the time its annoying but there's plenty of cards. Adding in one or two of the green adventure decks really makes it good though! And it was Jake not me

Well, I only played it the two times, both with you and Jake, as I recall. I enjoyed playing, but I found that both times seemed exactly the same, even though I was using different characters, equipment, allies etc. There wasn't really enough of a difference: no matter who you play, you're working on pumping up your skills -- all of them (compare to WoW Boardgame which is almost too many variables to juggle heh). I think you mentioned that one of the expansions adds classes and skills for each class, so that might add some replay value for me. I dunno... it's certainly not a bad game. I enjoyed it... I just didn't think it was different enough the second time to warrant a third time. Maybe if there was nothing else to play.

I've only played twice and both games were very different. The character development was the same but the environment we had to develop in changed greatly. Our last game, both the yellow and blue encounter cards were 3 in a row in their respective decks, this meant that the encounters didn't refresh. So we spent the game fighting over who could get to the encounters first and actually spend many turns just trying to get to the next avaliable spot. One of the main strategies for the Leader in that game was to quickly complete easy quests so that the low level players had no chance of catching up. It was very different from the first game.
The expansions at under $10 seem well worth it. Both games I played we cycled through a couple of the encounter decks, which lead to a few amusing "We thought he was dead" moments. The first deck I add to my game will have more encounters. Though really I don't think this reduced the replay value as much as increased the strategy of the game. Knowing that there is an encounter in there that will let you Swim through mountains and that it hasn't come up yet, may make you grab another green quest you may have skipped for example.
