Okay usually I wait until I finish a game to post a review but this time I doubt I will finish it so here you go with my thoughts so far.
Quickly - just not the same. Still pretty fun though.
Summary - the latest SSX extreme snow boarding game from EA. This one adds in Skiing as well. In this rendition you make your own character and start off as a rookie with just a few tracks to prove your worth on. As you complete tracks more open up and eventually you enter competitions. As you win those you win sponsorships and unlock new competitions. A new look, a new interface, a new style.
The good: it's still actually a lot of fun to play this game. The early events are easy enough and the competitions are just hard enough (so far). The controls have been changed a bit but are still pretty easy to pick up. The graphics are very nice improving on some already great ones from the previous editions. The moves you can pull off fairly easily were still really impressive to watch. The soundtrack had some good songs on it.
The bad: I don't understand why these companies don't leave a good thing alone. This one is quite the diversion from the previous games and I think the worse for it. Making your own character is fun, but the options are limiting, and I like the old characters. The events are all on the 'realistic' side and I miss the old pinball like trick levels from previous editions. The new soundtrack is alright but I really miss the SSX songs and the way they adapted to how well you are playing. No announcer! That was a big letdown. I miss hearing "now go call your momma into the room and show her how good you are!".
The Ugly: the style. They went for some urban wanker indie style thing with this one and it's annoying and ugly. It looks like some wankers sketch pad from math class. The manual is pretty much unreadable and the annoying sketches in the intro made me want to turn this off. No custom soundtracks allowed. I just don't understand that, every other EA game lets you import your soundtrack why not this one?
Overall: it's still SSX and thus still fun, just not as much fun as the older ones. This is my opinion though and I am sure some people like the way the game is heading. I would rather just play a Tricky 2 then some new game, give me some new maps, a new skater or two and I would have been happier. I suggest a rent, you may love the new style I definately did not.
