As I finally have a PC that is capable of gaming with again I have a lot of catching up to do as far as PC games go. This is the first of a series of reviews for games that have been out for some time but I never got a chance to play.
Quickly: may have been good in the day but I doubt it.
Summary: a Star Wars Real Time Strategy game. Fight some of the memorable ground battles using the RTS format. Control a variety of familiar and unfamiliar Star Wars units in a campaign, in scenarios or in multiplayer. This is all set in the original trillogy (actually the new ones may not have been out yet).
The Good: It's Star Wars. There is just something cool about every Star Wars game, even if they stink. The unit varity is really cool and it was interesting to see some new units not seen on the screen like Rebel tanks. The initial missions are fun as you recreate the initial opening of the first movie, playing Storm Troopers on Tatooine looking for the stolen plans (finding the escape pod, taking out the jawas, acing the skywalker farm etc).
The bad: it's old for one. It doesn't look so hot. I'm sure at the time the 3d accellerated graphics were amazing but they look bad now. The speed of the game is very slow. It takes forever to get anywhere. The battles just don't seem tense. See a bad guy right click wait for him to die. It's just not fun.
The Ugly: the interface. Okay I know this came out well after the RTS greats of Command and Conquer, Warcraft and Starcraft. Why oh why did they make some new fangled engine. The controls suck. You spend way too much time fighting with the camera and trying to find your units and figure out what is going on to actually enjoy anything the gameplay has to offer.
Overall: skip it. Don't even bother trying it, and if you find it in a discount bin for $1 there is a good reason it is there. It's also worth noting, that even I, a huge SW fan couldn't bother playing past training mission 3.
