Quickly: most visually impressive game I have seen in a long time, great controls, great immersion, just not my style.
Summary: The is a Modern Military FPS set during the current world events. Nothing specific to current military action is mentioned but you can tell what they are getting at. You play a member of a secret US military Black Ops. The game starts as a flashback with you in prison, telling the investigator how things went wrong. This one is definately more of a thinking mans FPS with lots of slow movement, careful shots and sneaking, and much less run and gun.
The Good: the graphics blew me away. If I didn't know better I would have thought I was playing on a PC or a 360. The ambient lighting and particle effects are marvelous. The sound is equally impressive and I am sure better in full surround (stupid xbox requiring a HDTV just to use the optical out). The immersion is amazing as well, I jumped multiple times playing this and was always on edge. It really give you a 'you are there, and if you do something wrong you are screwed' feel.
The Bad: This one is hard! I was playing on both the easy and normal levels and having difficulty even with the 3rd mission. I play a few console fps's so it wasn't the controls. You really have to take things one step at a time and not run in ever. The problem is this gets a bit boring for me, and well I try to speed things up and die. This one is more for the Tom Clancy fans then they Halo fans. The between mission visuals use real motion, real actors and this always looks cheezy. They tried to make it gritty and cool, but it still looks cheezy in a game. I don't know why, but it always does. Also the old fat investigator is the same guy that did the Voice for Silent Snake in Metal Gear, and it's just wrong seeing that voice come out of a old fat guy.
The Ugly: The missions are long with very few checkpoints. Also if you quit playing in the middle of a mission you have to start from the begining even if you had hit some checkpoints. This means two very bad things. One, if you die (which is often) you have to do it all over again. Two, if you die multiple times after the last checkpoint and need to 'cool down' when you turn it back on, you have to do the entire mission over. Oh and a third point, you can't skip cutscenes! Why! This is a simple thing to put in a game, hit X to skip a cutscene, why do so many game designers forget such an easy and every important feature.
Overall: this really is an amazing piece of work. It's probably a perfect black ops, lone soldier game, but personally, I don't like that style of game. I just couldn't get into it. As mentioned previously, if you are into Tom Clancey games you will probably love this, if you loved Halo, you may want to wait for Halo 3. I suggest renting it for any console FPS fan as it's just so amazing to see. If you like modern military and covert ops games you would probably do well to skip the rent and just buy it, but expect to die alot.
