Quickly: gimicky, hillarious, frustrating.
Summary: another Wii launch title and it shows it. This is a bazare collection of mini games for the Wii. There are over 70 different games. You unlock games in Story mode where you play Rayman captured by Rabids and forced to compete in events for their amusement. Each round you need to complete 3 of 4 mini games to get let into the boss stage. The Mini games are a complete mix all taking advantage of the Wii's unique controller system. The boss stages consist of bigger more involved levels that play like an FPS or a Racing game (at least thus far). There is also a score mode where you can re-play games you have unlocked in the story mode, unlocking new stuff (haven't actually tried yet).
The Good: this game is hillariously insane. Check out raymanzone.us.ubi.com/ravingrabbids/index.html for a quick look at how nuts and funny this is. The rabbids are extremely well animated and detailed. Their screams are also nice. The variety of mini games is very impressive. I wouldn't have have thought of so many unique ways to use the two controllers. The style of the games remind me a lot of Mario Party. You get a little screen telling you what you need to do, hit a button then do it, very similar to Mario Party, and not like WarioWare where you are guessing. This looks like it would be a ton of fun with a group of people passing off and potentially inbibing alcohol.
The Bad: not quite enough game put in there between the mini games. Between each level you have to walk around this arena, that has sub par graphics just to walk into the next gate. This could have easily been skipped with just a menu with 1-4 on it or made to look better or more interactive. Why no surround sound? The Wii thus far has the best surround sound I have heard on a console, and this game doesn't use it at all. The graphics, I know the Wii's not the graphics powerhouse the 360 or the PS3 is, but they could have done better then this. The rabbids are very well done, everything else looks like an afterthought.
The Ugly: Some near impossible games. For something that's a bit of a tech demo, there are some of the mini games where the controlls just don't seem to work right. There was one game where you had to slam outhouse doors shut, and keep them shut for 50 seconds. The door on the far right was near impossible to shut. This seemed like the controlls just wouldn't register at the edge of the TV which made this impossible. This means that there is a minigame that was so frustrtating it made me want to return the game instantly.
Overall: a rather gimicky yet hillarious game. The sheer insantiy fo this is well worth the rent just to see it and laugh at it. Lots of unique ways to use the Wii remote and Nunchuck. Some of the controlls seem a bit off though making some of the games near impossible (or actually impossible) which is insanely frustrating. The rest was a ton of fun and laughs though. Last night I was ready to toss this out the Window, this morning I can't wait to play again, so there has to be something to it. With over 70 minigames, this could be a keeper. Definately worth renting, especially if you have friends coming over.
