I've been seeing quite a bit of hype around this one so thought I would try it.
This is a Free to play, free to download, MMORPG from the guys who put out Guild Wars, Auto Assault, City of Heroes/Villains and Lineage. With that great a Pedigree I figured this had to be a rather impressive game.
I was wrong it seems.
The download went smooth and setting up a character was uber quick. There are only 4 classes to chose from an no races, but what do you expect for only 0$.
You get dumped right into the first city with the first wilderness dungeon just out the first gate. A horde of n00bs and players harassing or helping n00bs are there and you go through a quick, how to control your toon thing. Then you head out and start doing quests.
Every quest I tried was to kill something, or to kill hordes of things. There was one that almost wasn't, as I had to find a cave and warp back to town, but then once back it was go in and wipe out everything inside.
The controls were uber simple, click to move, click to attack, use skills via number keys. You definitely don't start with a lot of skills. The game plays very much like a 3d Diablo, with the camera behind the player. You click on where you want to move, see a baddie and click on him to attack, then click on the stuff on the ground to pick it up.
Inventory is handled Diablo style, and you even have health and mana (where mana powers your skills, and is called something other then mana, but we all know mana).
You can easily find a party of people to help you go kill stuff.
The best part of the game is the 'pick up and play' feel. You just jump on, find a couple other players and go run a dungeon, battling the denizens and avoiding traps. All in all a good concept.
The bad stuff: it's free to play because they want to you pay. You can subscribe for only $5 a month, which many players encouraged due to the cost. The biggest thing this does is lets you stack items in your inventory. Just imagine playing diablo without stacking items. Paying also lets you use a lot of in game items you can't without paying, Like any healing potions greater then lesser. You can also purchase things like double Xp for an hour, or extra stats for the right amount.
Due to this you aren't useless without subscribing but definitely hindered. You will pretty much suck in a party with paying players if you don't play.
The really bad part: I played this for two days and had some fun, it's probably the best totally free game I have played (that wasn't totally free due to being pirated). There is one problem though, I just never went back. I just never had the urge to play again. I tried it, it was kinda fun, it was kinda neat, but I have other games I would rather be playing (which I admit I paid for).
So I was going to hold off until I did a great dungeon run in the game instead of just the n00b wilderness stuff, but I can't seem to bring myself to play again, so I guess that made it review time.
So overall: probably the best totally free game I have played, that definitely encourages you to spend some money to get more out of it. You can play without paying, but will be hindered. The biggest problem though is though a good game and some fun, it just didn't draw me in and I don't really feel like booting it up again.
