Quickly: looks prettier but just not as good as 2.
[glow=Blue,2,300]Summary:[/glow]The 3rd Call of Duty game still set during World War II. This game follows three armies during the period after D-Day and the various battles that led up to the Allies re-claiming France from the Germans. The units involved this time around are American Rangers, Canadian Highlanders and a Polish Armoured Devision. Again in all cases you play a low ranking officer in the unit and need to follow orders to stay alive.
The controls and gameplay are near identical to the last couple of games. Gone is the A button vault over linear obstacles and added are quite a few vehicle and heavy artillery levels.
Online play is of course included and includes ranked and player matches of the usual format. A lot more Achievements have been added include a ton for online play. Downloadable content is limited to themes and multiplayer maps.
[glow=green,2,300]The Good:[/glow]The first thing that really strikes you in this one is the graphics. They are head and shoulders above number 2. This is a fine looking game and worthy of the title next generation (well I guess it's just this generation now). The fact you get to play Canadians is just cool in my opinion. The battles are just as stressful, intense and riveting as the last game. The number of locations to battle in have definitely been increased. No getting sick of running through building after building, from hills, to forests, from trench to wine cellar there are a lot of different locals. I had a great time with the various jeep driving levels even though they kinda felt like a mini game tacked on to the main game.
[glow=yellow,2,300]The Bad:[/glow]Why did they get rid of the A hop over obsticle button? Now you just have the standard FPS A to jump that feels so 'game like' and fake. A lot of the style of the last game wasn't in this one. No real war footage. No speeches from Eisenhower. Even the quotes weren't as good. It just didn't give the same feel of living through a part of history as the last game did. Even worse was the way they seemed to go over the top with the politically incorrectness. Besides everyone and their brother making fun of the French, they also felt the need to have lines like "as long as they don't come from a coloured". I'm sure some of it is period but it was over the top. Along with this was the amount of insubordination in each unit and the number of instances of the squads pulling guns on themselves. One case of it may have been cool, but more then that is just too much. It's like they tried to be overly melodramatic to get you in the mood, but instead it just seemed hammed up and unnecessary. Instead of feeling sorry for the trooper that gets shot, I was just thinking, "oh gods they felt the need to kill off another one?"
[glow=red,2,300]The Ugly:[/glow]This game is at least twice as hard on easy as number 2 and at least 10 times as hard on Normal. This can be controller tossingly frustrating. Even worse is the fact that in most levels there are in infinite number of Germans and they just keep coming unless you advance. This totally killed the realism and my sit back and slowly advance play style that I had gotten used to in the last game. They definitely tried to make it more Arcade like, and I wasn't a fan of that. There were also way to many cheap shots, where I would just be dead for discernible reason at all. What made this even worse was the fact that they moved the checkpoints further apart, meaning when you died you had to do a large portion of the level over again. It's like instead of coming up with a better story and more strategy for their new part 3, they just decided to make it harder.
[glow=purple,2,300]Overall:[/glow]I wasn't a big fan of this. I probably wouldn't have played through it if I hadn't just loved number 2 and planned on picking up the highly popular number 4. It just didn't have the feel and history of part 2. Some of the new additions were welcome like the better graphics and minigame like driving and hand to hand fights but a higher difficulty and infinitely re-spawning Germans ruined the happy feelings these gave. It's still a pretty good game, I'm glad I played it through, but it's nothing compared to number 2. I recommend a rent if you are a fan of WWII shooters, but only after you have picked up number 2 (and from what I here 4).
