Installed this last night.
So far this is a very different game from other releases from NCSoft. This is more of an MMO with MMORPG elements.
You start the game right in training mode, no character generation besides picking a Call Sign. The training tells you how to control you mech. This game is action based, more of a FPS then anything else. You used WASD to move around, double tapping keys to toss on short term boosters for extra hight and speed. Add a spacebar based jump and you have all the movement keys.
Next you have your left and right mouse button, each button relates to a hand on your mech. You hold down your right mouse button and it shoots your right hand weapon, left mouse button shoots your left hand weapon. There are only four types of weapons in the game. SMG which shoot fast but have very short range, Rifles which shoot slow but have very long range, Launchers which need to lock on to hit and you can't move but do massive damage, and hand to hand which is a devastating combo of sword and shield that can kill in one hit if you get close enough. Your weapons overheat, and you only get to bring two sets to a battle. You can swap weapons with the R key, switching between sets.
There are also four skill slots delegated to the 1-4 keys but I haven't seen any of these in the beta yet, so either the come after further play or haven't fully been implemented yet.
The starting missions have you learning how to move and jump, then how to use each weapon type including swapping weapons mid battle. Interesting the last 3 missions are optional but if you complete them you will get bonus money and items when you get to the main game.
This was all very interesting and MMO like, and then I finished the tutorial and ended up in a FPS Lobby. Where I picked a game to enter, set up matches or joined an optimatch. The options were Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Territories, or Siege. That's it. No missions, no home base, no quests.
You join the battle type of your choice, and play it out like any other FPS, but in 3rd person view. It reminded me a lot of Star Wars Battlefront, especially the Territories battles. Each match you win points and XP.
Here is where the RPG elements come in. Each match you win XP, money and points which will level up your character. I have only started so can't tell you exactly what you get, but looking at other players, you definitely get access to unique bits to customize and improve your mech, new weapons and new paint schemes. With the points I would assume there are skills to be improved but haven't seen it in play.
So far it's a great looking game, that plays very fast and furious, but I highly doubt most standard MMORPG fans will like it and I have a feeling that is the Target Market based on NCSoft's other games. Now FPS fans may love this one, the way you advance your character and customize is a lot cooler then just clan bragging rights from most online shooters.
