The latest mini I have been working on is from the Fairy Meat line from Kenzer and Co.
Fairy Meat is some form of miniature battle game where evil nasty fairies fight it out. Or something like that. I don't actually own the game. I picked up a few of the Fairy Meat minis to paint up for a local art show held at the ArtSpeak Gallery here in Windsor. I managed to get one of these painted up at the time, but had two left over. One of these I am finally starting to paint now.
Based on the three I did pick up:
The good: All three were well cast with very minor mold lines. What I really liked was where the mold lines were located. None of them are in hard to fix places, like in hair or on faces. I really like the cartoony nature of the sculpts. For such 'silly' looking minis they have a lot of detail. The one I am currenly painting has the most detailed eye I have ever seen on a mini (see the ugly). Scale: I like the fact the scale is different on these ones. The three I have are all different sizes, with the 'fighter' being the largest and the 'archer' being the smallest.
The bad: The wings just aren't that well done. Even worse is how they attach to the mini. All of the wings are hole over peg style attachments. This means you will need to do some putty work if you actually want to hide the join. I also find the chunky metal just doesn't look very delicate. Boring bases. They are better then the reaper cauliflower but not nearly as nice as a peg or slotta system.
The Ugly: casting issues. The one I am painting now has some casting issues, and in the worst possible place, half of his face. It's really a shame as the rest of the mini is nice and clear, but the one side of his face is a bit of a mess. I'm not a talented enough sculptor to fix this either. I will be trying to do my best to hide this with paint.
Overall: I was rather impressed by this series. Something different from what you usually find out there. I did have one mini with a casting issue with the face, so make sure you check the packs before you buy.
Here is a pic of the first one of the three I painted (note I glued the big ugly disc base to a slota and coverd with a variety of flock):
I may post pics of the second one I am working on now if I ever finish it.
