I was finally able to locate some P3 paints semi-locally.
Quickly: live up to the hype.
Summary: These are a 'new' line of paints designed by Games Workshop Veteran Mick McVey being released by Privateer Press. They are currently released in 6 packs in set colours for each of the Warmachine factions (as well as a generic colour pack). There will eventually be released 72 colours as well as a set of supporting inks and flow enhancers.
Privateer claims these paints have more pigment and more flow enhancer then the other paints on the market. This means they flow better, blend better and actually coat better then anything out there (so far, GW claims the same with their Foundation paints). These also come in bottles that are identical to the real old Citadel Flip tops. A lot of people love those (I am still using Citadel ones, so never really got to miss them).
The Good: The claims are all true. These paints to coat better then anything I have used (which includes GW, Reaper, RalPartha, Polly S, Vallejho and Testors). They flow extremely well as well. I know it's a bad thing to do in general, but I found them great to use right out of the pot. Watering down makes the paint transparent and thins them but doesn't actually reduce the amount of colour. This is a very nice property great for layering. With these paints I was able to fully paint an Orcs pants in about 15 minutes. This included a deep red base coat, that took only 1 coat over black, and about 5 Highlight layers all of the same colour, just adding less water for each successive layer. A fully shaded pair of red pants in 15 minutes is amazing. I would say they are above Table Top Quality, though not my best work, but for that amount of time, they are great. Another nice touch is the fact that you tend to get 2 paints for each colour a base and a highlight. This means less mixing, and more painting. I had no issues mixing these with GW and Vallejho paints.
The Bad: These things are impossible to find and not very cheap. The impossible to find should get better as more people try them, as they are great paints. The price I can't do anything about, and could just be sticker shock on my part as I haven't really been buying a lot of paints lately. The paints are about $3 US a pot, sets costing about $18 US. I was disappointed to find that the sets of 6 were no cheaper then the individual pots, at least at RIW hobbies. These paint pots being identical to the old GW ones will have an issue with paint donuts forming in the caps. I still say this is preferable to your lids drying stuck shut or your paints drying up as the lids don't fit quite right, but I know some people hate this.
The Ugly: The colour selection is a bit weak right now. Everything is designed for very specific faction colours. You will have to pick up at least 4 sets just to get your basic range of colorrs if you are using them for more then just painting Warjacks. This is fixed if the store you are shopping at is willing to break them up or if you are willing to wait until the full set is released. The base highlight combos don't exist for all colours, just the main Warmachine colours. Now some people are complaining about the base and highlight combo, they think they are getting ripped off by this as they can create their own highlight colours. I can see their point, but I prefer having my highlight colour sitting there pre-mixed when I want it.
Overall: I love these paints. If it weren't for the price I would just go out and pick up a complete set. I can still afford to add to my P3 collection as time goes on and that's just what I plan on doing. There were a lot of promises made about these paints and how great they are, and for me all of them were well founded. Definitely a great set of paints that could easily replace most of the pots on my painting table.
