Okay this is the most depressing news I've read in a while.
Not sure if people have been keeping up with Natal? Natal is the new interface that M$ is working on that is supposed to revolutionize gaming and have us putting the controllers away for good. It's a type of motion sense technology that will sit in front of your TV and catch every motion. Want to play a shooter, hold a toy gun to point your finger, want to swing a bat: swing anything. Rather cool stuff actually, though I don't know if it will ever eliminate button mashing or at least mouse use.
Here's the crapy news: instead of it being a controller you buy, it's going to have to be a new Xbox you have to buy. /boo /hiss.
"DigiTimes is now reporting that Aptina has won the rights to be the supplier of "1.3-megapixel CMOS image sensors (CIS) for a new version of the Xbox 360 console under Microsoft's Project Natal technology." Further confirming our previous report about Natal, DigiTimes also says that sources in Taiwan indicate the new Xbox 360 will be released in the latter half of 2010. "
"Microsoft is sure to continue denying that Natal is a new console (or perhaps they'll simply go with a "no comment"), but the evidence continues to mount that this new technology might not turn out to be the type of simple add-on Microsoft led us to believe at E3."
older news that hinted at this:
"Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer spoke today at The Executive's Club of Chicago and confirmed that a new Xbox 360 will be released in 2010.
Ballmer didn't come right out and reveal all the details, but he made a number of allusions to the details that suggest this is the Xbox Natal that we reported on late last week. According to TG Daily, Ballmer claimed the system carries technology "really, really close" to becoming a reality, has a "natural interface," and includes a camera that can sense both movement and voice. "
For those of you who haven't seen Natal in action, here's the main trailer that's out there:
