This is a review of the Module Treasure of Talon Pass which was given out free on Free RPGA day 2008.
Summary:
This is a 2nd level, 4th edition adventure.
It is set in a generic setting so can easily fit into the standard campaign world as well as any campaign setting (such as The Forgotten Realms or Ebberon).
The adventure has the party trying to recover a Jade Chalice from a long lost keep in an Mountain Peak known as Talon Pass. 4 Different hoops are propsed along with a Major Quest and 2 Minor quests. These are all easily modified to fit into your ongoing campaign.
Treasure is done using the Parcel system and the module includes a unique treasure that is only detailed in this module, the Talon Amulet. Along with the unique treasure the module also came with a unique Dungeon Tile that is used in the final battle of the module.
The adventure takes place through a two level dungeon with a total of 12 encounter areas. These range from fights against hordes of monsters to a climactic battle vs a solo elite.
MINOR SPOILER WARNING:
Do not read any more of the summary if you do not want know what you may face in this module.
The party gets to the dungeon just as a group of Orcs has entered also seeking the Chalice. They come across the Orcs battling Kobold residents. Along with these forces the party will also have to contend with ancient Undead Forces (including a new monster type, the Pack Zombie), and a Mad Wizard and possibly challenge a Dragon. There is one rather deadly Trap as well.
The final battle is very interesting and takes place on the unique dungeon tile that features an arena like pit. Magical effects happen during the fight to make the battle more interesting. These occur each time a creature is slain or bloodied.
The Good:
Excellent module for a level 2. Lots of depth and a good variety of fights. Each encounter had some little bit to it to make it interested. These ranged from new monsters to multi level rooms with balconies and platforms. The unique treasure is a great one and one that nearly any character could use. The final battle was very memorable and I loved having a unique tile to put down just for that.
The Bad:
This module also came with a miniature, a unique repaint. The odd part is that it didn't really fit any of the creatures in the module. The module introduced two new monsters and neither was the same as the mini. Still a cool mini though. I personally found the Dragon a bit much. Put in there just because it's Free RPG day and the game is called Dungeons and Dragons. I guess it gave a reason for the place to be filled with Kobolds, but it just didn't really fit the rest of the theme of the module.
The Ugly:
No skill challenges or any other interaction scenes. This entire module is really a series of combat encounters. Now this isn't a horrible thing, especially if your group prefers combat encounters, but it's an omission in my thoughts. Adding a skill challenge or two may make this one a bit more interesting.
Overall:
Rather enjoyed running this one. It was very easy to toss into my existing campaign and made for a good module to run after running the one from the Starter Set and the one from the back of the 4e DMG. I think my players all enjoyed it, at least they seemed to. I know the player that got the Talon Amulet is pretty happy with it.
