This is an open invite to all Windsor and surrounding area gamers. The Windsor Gaming Resource will be hosting an afternoon of gaming on Saturday March 22nd at the Walker Road Knights of Columbus, in Windsor Ontario, from Noon until 6:00PM. This will be our 14th Games and Grub event. At previous events we played some great games including Advanced Civilization, Alhambra, Attika, Bang!, Bohnanza, Chez Dork, Dust, El Grande, Formula D, Igor, Hacienda, Munchkin, Power Grid, Pandemic, Puerto Rico, Settlers of Catan, Shadows Over Camelot, , Smallworld, Starcraft, Ticket to Ride and more. We will have access to 2-3 large tables that should fit up to three reasonably sized boardgames each, or one massive one like The World of Warcraft Boardgame. The Knights of Columbus will be open to the public at the time, but this has never been a problem in the past and we have held multiple events at this venue. The worst that happens is regulars come over and ask what the heck are we playing and then ask if it's anything like Risk or Monopoly. The KofC has a good sized offering of home cooked comfort food style items. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic Beverages will also be available. As the Council is not charging us to host this event I encourage everyone to support the venue by purchasing some food and/or drink while at the event. The KofC is is located at 1711 Walker Road between Tecumseh and Seminole. At these events we usually play boardgames, but we have also had people there playing Star Wars Minis and various CCGs. I'm not sure exactly what games I will be bringing this time, but I am more then willing to teach any game I do bring. I also encourage others to bring games they would like to share with their fellow gamers. If there are any requests for games to be played please let me know and I see will do what I can to accommodate. A disclaimer: The WGR has no ties or affiliation with the Knights of Columbus or what they represent, it's just a good venue to play some games at that also happens to be free.

Wow, I haven't played any of those!
Based on the feedback I have gotten so far it looks like we could have quite a few people with a lot of newcomers. Also I know of at least one group that won't be able to make it for the start of the event so may be showing up while everyone else is in the middle of a game. Due to this I think I am going to bring a couple old standards. Settlers of Catan - for the people new to 'non-monopoly' gaming. Shadows Over Camelot - because people can jump in and out. Bohnanza - tend to bring this to every event as it's easy to pick up and good filler for a group waiting for other games to end.
Other then those, I'm not positive. I will probably decide the morning of. I'm thinking about: St. Petersburg - so that we can finally play it with the proper rules. Galaxy Trucker - fun for non/new-gamers and easy to pick up. Agricola or Caylus - these are great games I don't actually play often enough. Thurn and Taxis - only played twice and liked it and want to get more use out of it.
Hmm... you know what I might bring for a change of pace is Starfarers of Catan. It would be good for people who only know Catan.
Also there was a specific request for the Fantasy Flight version of Cosmic Encounter if you are willing to bring that.

Will be attending... Wouldn't mind getting in a game of Galaxy Trucker (Big Expansion) with anyone who's played it before. I can bring the game if need be. The game just looked interesting so I picked it up, have read through the rules, but haven't played it yet. Look forward to seeing everyone !

I will bring the FFG Cosmic Encounter as per request. I have The Big Expansion for Galaxy Trucker but haven't tried out all the different "modules" yet. We pretty much leave the extra ship pieces in (and therefore use the blue aliens), and we've tried the Class II ships once (difficult to get my head around). Leave out the Rough Road and Evil Machinations cards until you are REALLY good.
Nuns on the Run - plays up to 8. Sort of a reverse Scottland Yard. Everybody is hidden except for the guy playing the guards.
Tobago- finding treasure on a island. I would put this in Settlers of Catan weight class. Only takes about 45mins to play. I think this will win Spiel de Jahres this year. I could teach this in about 5 mins.
Endeavor- Area control of shipping colonial shipping lanes. Elegant Euro design. No random other than initial set up.
Saboteur- plays up to 10 in about 30 mins. Everybody is a dwarf trying to mine gold. Everybody gets a loyalty. Some are loyal, others are Saboteurs trying to prevent the gold from being found.
Dream Factory- Reprint of Hollywood Blockbuster (which was a reprint of Tramfabrik). Reiner Kiniza auction game with a movie making theme.

I would definately be down for some Galaxy Trucker.
I was thinking of bring Dungeon Lords, Through the Ages (speaking of Vlaada Chvatil), and/or Modern Art (although I think it's pretty similar from Dream Factory, from what I've read, so it might be redundant) - would there be any interest in any of these?

I personally would like to try Dungeon Lords, that's high on my wishlist just due to the theme, seeing it get nominated for a bunch of game of the year awards has me wanting it even more. Jamie's bringing a bunch of stuff I've never played I would love to try also. The problem is that I have a feeling I will be teaching more games then playing, but we will see.

I too would like to try Dungeon Lords. I'd kind of dismissed it as I had read/listened to some negative reviews. Would still like to try it.
Most of the games I'm bringing are shorter games. In the 45min - 1hour range.
Alex- Modern Art is quite a bit different than Dream Factory but they are still both Knizia auction games.

I can bring my copy of Galaxy Trucker but I don't have The Big Expansion (yet). I would love to play it again as I really enjoy it and have only played 2.5 times and only once with the right rules Sounds like we are going to have more then enough choices there today. It also sounds like we will have a record number of new attendees which is awesome! See you all later this afternoon.

Lots of great games played today at Games and Grub 14.
18 players showed up and I was very happy to see a group of first timers. I hope (and am pretty sure that) everyone had a great time.
List of games played: Settlers of Catan Dungeon Lords Saboteur Galaxy Trucker Nuns on the Run Zombies!!! Start Player Bohnanza Battlestar Galactica with Pegasus expansion.
That really made me want to get together and play more. There were quite a few games I wish
Looking forward to the next one (though not sure when that will be). It may be July before the next event unfortunately due to my work schedule. If I can do anything about that, I will.

Excellent time playing games again today. Maybe it's just me but it seemed to go by really fast. Thought it was around 4pm... looked at the clock and it was quarter to six.
Games I played and thoughts on said games: 1) Settlers of Catan - It had been a while since I played Catan so this was a bit of a throw back. This was one of the longest games of Catan I can remember playing. The shortage of both wheat and wood really hampered any forward progress for quite a while. Also people kept putting the robber on the wheat saying "i need some wheat", which in itself didn't help them so much get wheat as keep wheat from entering the game. I also got hosed by the robber WAY TO MUCH! (I'm not bitter)
2) Galaxy Trucker - Had another great time with this game. Even when your ship is being destroyed it is great fun to play. It was also a very close game with just one point seperating 1st and 2nd... and one point seperating 3rd and 4th (of course 74 points seperated 2nd and 3rd... hehe) Highlight of the game had to be (guy whose name I don't remember)'s ship finishing the second run with just ONE piece.
3) Saboteur - This is a nice quick filler, and I like that it handles up to 10 people, and is done in about 20-30 mins. The saboteurs seemed to have a hard time, and only stopped the miners once.
4) Nuns on the Run - I think this is a really fun game. Along the lines of Galaxy Trucker where sometimes the experience of playing and tension of ALMOST being caught (or having your ship destroyed)outweighs the actual outcome. There are a few fiddly little rules that are hard to explain, which makes it a little more difficult to teach. Once you get a handle on the mechanics and line of sight issues I think it plays fast, and again I like that it can play up to 8 players.
Questions: 1) For those who played Dungeon Lords, what are your thoughts on it? 2) For the BattleStar Galactica Group, how did you like the New Caprica ending? as opposed to the Kobol end condition?
That is all. -Jamie

I'd never played the game before, but I did get the feeling from what others were saying that the Kobol end condition was easier for the players to achieve. We got boned (pardon the expression) pretty hard after we got to New Caprica.

Sabateur was pretty interesting. I thought I jumped in after the 3rd or 4th game though. As a Sabateur twice I found it really hard to really mess things up without totally giving yourself away and just ending up with broken tools for the rest of the game. I would give it another go though, as only playing once doesn't give me much of a basis for judgment.
The Catan game was odd. I had fun though. There did seem to be a bit of confusion on the robber. I think the thought was that if a player had a setlement on a tile with a resource they probably had some, as opposed to paying attention to what was rolled and remembering who has what.
I liked Nuns, that last game was so close. Rolling one less on a D6 would have made the difference that last turn. There are some odd rules though, that's for sure.
Trucker was fun as usual. I think it was Kevin that had a pod racer for the last few cards and finished with just a pod at the end. Closest game I have played of GT. Definitely adding the expansion to my pick up soon list.

A 'game' of Saboteur is 3 rounds of treasure finding. We had played a full 3 rounds before you jumped in. Then a full 3 rounds (2nd game) after you jumped in.

Alas, I am the guy (Henry) who played Galaxy Trucker and ended up with one piece at the end of the third round. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. Being that it was my first time playing the game I am proud to say that my spaceship made it home (although I lost 99% of it on the way!).
Thanks for the great time. I am a regular Catan player and it was refreshing to try something new.
Reading about the catan game that was played is funny. I'm always bitter when picked on, intentionally or not.
If anyone wants to catan crazy I'm trying to get a catan tourny together at Hugin Munin on June 19. Imagine playing 5 or 6 games of catan in one day.

Henry! Very sorry about getting the name wrong. I'm already horrible with names and having 4 new people out at one event just broke my memory.
That was one of the more entertaining games of Galaxy Trucker I have played. I can't believe how close it was between the two groups of players. It really is a game you need to play at least twice though. The first game doesn't really count as it's just for learning, once you play another round you will find you are able to make much better ships as you will know to watch out for cutting yourself off, you will know what kinds of things you will face and will have a better idea of how many things like thrusters and lasers you need.
