William Gibson’s 1984 cyberpunk classic to be made into a film by Splice director Neuromancer, the 1984 novel by William Gibson credited with popularising the cyberpunk genre, is finally getting the film treatment. The film will be directed by Vincenzo Natali, whose SF thriller Splice is due to be released in the UK on 10 July. Canadian Natali also directed the low-budget cult movie Cube, back in 1977. The story was broken by The Hollywood Reporter earlier today, but the page seems to have been taken down for some reason (possibly the story just turned out to be Natali getting a bit drunk and telling a journo, “Y’know, I’d really like to make Neuromancer…”) Neuromancer has had a far-reaching influence on the SF of the past 25 years, and was one of the first SF novels to really explore and exploit cyberspace. The question is, can Natali make it relevant to today, when many of its ideas, so original and influential at the time, might seem overly familiar to audiences brought up on the likes of The Matrix? Even the whole cyberpunk ethos seems a bit past its sell-by date now. Then again, maybe the film can find a new style and angle to reignite the genre. It certainly deserves it. Natali, you are a brave man. Source: www.sfx.co.uk/2010/05/07/neuromancer-finally-getting-movie-treatment/

I hope it turns out well and even if it is not the blockbuster movie of the year I hope it at least stays true to the book.
