I'm considering having some type of Miniature Painting event. Possibly painting lessons, maybe just sitting around chatting and painting together, heck maybe even a competition. Perhaps a paint and play where we paint the mini for some game then play it. Would anyone be interested in this? EDIT: please choose yes if "you don't currently paint but are still interested"

Oh I am so there! Sounds like fun. I'm not really interested in a paint and play event. Howevere a mini painting demo/competition would totally warrant finding a sitter.
Come on guys, chime in if you're interested so we can plan this thing!

I'd be fun to get together and paint. Maybe those of us with a lot of paints could share with guys who haven't bought a large variety of paints yet, maybe share advice too. I'm working on a secret project right now, but I'm having a hard time not showing off.
One way of having a painting competition that I've heard of is Iron Painter, where you bring a primed miniature, and sit and paint with everyone all day, and at the end of the day everyone votes on who did the best. It's a good way to hurry up and get that model, that looked so cool when you bought it, finished already.

If we did have some sort of competition, I was thinking of somethign exactly like that. 4 to 1 for so far. That's not exactly enthusiasm. Will be giving this a week before I make a call on whether to go forward with this or not.
If you know peopel who will be interested direct them here to vote. For now I'm goign to change the site settigns so that even guests can vote as I know many people aren't going to want to create an account just to vote on this.
EDIT: okay I guess I can't do that. Seems that voting on polls is restricted to either Registered Users or Staff.

I'm interested.
I don't hold out much hope that I'll be very good but I'd give it a try.

Some pretty sweet news. Mick Leach of Eastern Front Studios has offered to sponsor our event! This is a miniature company out of the U.S. that does mainly Fantasy Minis with a mix of other stuff. Here's their facebook group: www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/group.php?gid=130097903687916&ref=mf A few sample minis: I'm still discussing what type of support Eastern Front Studios will provide with Mick but it looks like we will be receiving some minis for the event! Due to this I'm thinking an Iron Painter will be perfect. You come in and pick from one of the Eastern Front miniatures and sit down and paint. Experienced painters will be on hand to show you the basics or trade tips and tricks with other experienced painters. At the end of the day we give out some rewards (possibly Easter Front minis or perhaps something else) to things like the Quickest Painter, the Best Painted. Most colours on one mini, etc. Now how great does this event sound? EDIT: Just realized I missed a pretty important part: There would be no cost to participate in the event and I'm pretty sure we can arrange to have enough paints and brushes for everyone who doesn't have their own.

Getting a free mini for showing up is a damn good incentive; people who don't paint so well don't have to try to "win", and people who are already good painters are only competing for bragging rights. And the company that provides the miniatures gets a showcase: figure the best painted would be worthy to put in their gallery. Here's a link to Eastern Front's website: easternfront-studios.ecrater.com/The only trouble I'd have with the contest is trying to get there early so I've got the pick of the minis to choose from. That pirate ogre would be fun, but I could also do an awesome lava elemental! In some ways, it's tempting to order the minis beforehand. I'd rather paint a mini that inspires me than one that no one else wanted, and I'd have a chance to convert it beforehand.

At this point we are in discussion with Hugin and Munin and EFS to determine when the best time to have this event will be. It's looking like we should be able to pull this together by early October. We are aiming for a Saturday, the oposite weekend to an RPGA event.
We are also talking about the potential of an RPG swap that same day, as miniature and RPGs go together so well and I think we would get more people out for a combined event then we would for two separate events.
This doesn't mean you should stop voting though if you haven't already. We need a way to gague how many supplies we will need for the event and this poll is one of the tools we are using for that.

We have a green light on this event.
Mick is currently working on some final updates to the Eastern Front Studios website. These should be done by this weekend. Once those are complete I will post up an official event with a lot more info.
The short version: Oct 16th from Noon - 5PM at Hugin and Munin Eastern Front Studios is graciously donating some minis for this event. This event is partly in honour of the re-launch of EFS. In addition we welcome people to bring their own minis. We suggest they be primed before showing up. We will have paints etc. avaliable but also encourage people to bring thier own if they have them just so we have enough to go around. There will be some fun contests with prizes. The foucs will be on hanging out with other painters and sharing in the hobby. We want people to share what they know and learn from others. Any contests are secondary. Mick of Eastern Front also wants to give a special prize out to the best painted Eastern Front Mini that day.
Watch the Local Events boards for more info soon.
