A pretty thorough review of the new Dungeons and Dragons Starter Set better known as Red Box. I thought this was worth sharing as it points out some shortfalls of Red Box I haven't seen pointed out elsewhere: newbiedm.com/2010/09/06/newbiedm-review-red-box-starter-set/A few notes that surprised me: "Other than pictures, there is nothing here to show a new player what the heck a fantasy race is. " "the characters made with this box aren’t even compatible with the Essentials characters in “Heroes of the Fallen Lands” "One thing about the DM’s book that I didn’t like is that I’m not sure I understand the logic of including some stuff in the DM’s book, rather than the player’s book. I’m specifically talking combat rules and things about saving throws, death and dying."

I think this product has gone from a slamdunk Xmas present for my nephews (age 12,12 and 11) to an avoid at all costs and maybe MAYBE get them some of the later essentials stuff to get them going.

I still think Red Box would probably stand well on it's own. As a stepping stone to D&D and essentials I think it's pretty much worthless.

I bought the red box and played it with a few friends who were new to 4th edition and we all had a lot of fun. I would recommend it for your nephews actually, its really great for introducing people to the game, and comes with a good adventure to start them off with. Happy Gaming.
