Quickly - great addictive game though repetative.
Summary - open ended game where you play a pirate. There is a basic story behind the game where 4 of you family members have been captured and you have to resque them and get revenge, but this doesn't flow like a story, more like a set of goals you can strive towards. There are a ton of things to do in this game: Sail the high seas, sea battles, taking ships, sinking ships, running errands, escorting ships, wooing the governor's daughter (or wooing all the governors' daughters), trading goods, exploring, finding ancient temples, sieging towns, overthrowing world powers, and probably about 100 things I forgot about. When you accomplis certain things you get fame points, these determine your overall rank in the game. You play until you get too old and retire. This can be a long time if played right.
The Good: massively addictive. Seems like there is always something more to get done and you get the "I will sack just one more city..." thing happening alot. The ship combat system is simple but fun. The goals are interesting. The world seems realistic as there are tons of things happening no matter what you are working on. A ton of fun, and well you get to be a Pirate!
The Bad: massively addictive. There is a ton of repetition in this game. You do alot of the same things over and over and watch the same graphics over and over. I only went through the game once until retirement, but I have a feeling that I will have seen it all already (though I do want to play again). The actuall quests and storyline are pretty easy and only weakly tied to the game itself. It takes forever to get paces against the wind.
The Ugly: sound and graphics on this are dated, and so are some of the gameplay elements (the swordfighting for example). The tactical battles on the ground are weak as well. Some odd glitches trying to navigate narrow water.
Overall: I loved this, though it wasn't quite as good as I expected. I can't stree enough the addictive quality where you need to quit to say go to sleep, but you will after you find one Treasure Gallion. I would say this is not for everyone but if you like sim/strategy games you will probably like this one.
I will have to see if it stands up to replay though.
