I was recently able to get into the Auto Assault Trading Card Game Beta. Here are my thoughts on the game so far.
Quikly: a good game, not enough people playing yet, hard to judge what's a good deck.
Summary:
The is a online trading card game based on the soon to be released Auto Assault MMORPG. You play a 'road warrior' fighting against an oponent (beta is only two player, game will support 8). There are three potential ways of winning. You can destroy your opponnents vehicle, you can complete 4 missions or your opponent can run out of cards.
You start with a vehicle card and you keep the same vehicle all game. You also start with a set of 4 mission cards. The remaing cards form your deck. These include Manouvers (like swerve, full throtal etc), Gear (weapons, tires, armour), units (Guys you can use to defend missions and attack), and tactics (cards used to modify combat).
You take turns like any normal CCG/TCG. Play manouvers -> used to complete missions. Then play other cards and launch assaults (attacks on your oponents). Gear gives you bonuses to your car (or free attacks with ranged weapons). Manouvers besides being used to complete missions are also used to increase your speed. Units. These guard missions and can be used to attack the oponents.
For an assualt you start off with an attack total of 0 and your oponents defence is equal to their speed. A wide variety of cards are tapped (they call it something else) or played to adjust these two numbers (ex manouvers can be tapped to add to speed, tactics greatly modify combat numbers, etc). A random card is drawn and a number at the bottom of the card is added to the attack total. If this beats speed damage is done to the oponents armour. Once all amrour is gone the unit is destroyed. Untapped manouvers can be tapped at this time to add to damage as can many weapon gear cards.
There is of course a ton more to is like any CCG/TCG, with many cards modifying the basic rules.
The Good:
This is a solid TCG with a great game mechanic. The system is very solid and plays well. The cards look great, the art is excellent. The world of AA is pretty cool and it comes out well in the cards. The online interface is excellent and makes it very easy to play. It reminds me alot of the old Magic PC game (Planeswalker). Every game I have had has been close, and I am still new. This to me means that there is no winning strategy or killer decks (yet). There were some really cool card combos avaliable already. I was able to make a deck that could win with just common cards. The mechnic where you use the manouver cards for defence as well as completing missions (where the cards are removed from the game) makes for some interesting tactical choices.
The Bad:
The ballance on some of the cards seems off, this is one of the major things that is getting changed in the beta, every time I log on cards rarities are changing or the card abilities themselves are being altered. You generally play one Faction of three when playing a game, but when you get a booster you get random cards, so you can get a lot of useless stuff. It's not short. Maybe once everyone learns to play games will go quicker, but you can't get in a quick half hour match with this one. It takes a bit of time to widdle down your oponent (or complete those 4 missions).
The Ugly:
There is no one playing. It's an open beta currently free to pretty much anyone and no one is on. I have had to wait forever to even get to play a match. This doesn't bode well for when the game is released. The game being released leads me to the next ugly: Its an online CCG where you have to buy your cards online. They are also talking about a monthly fee
Summary: a good ccg. A great interface, interesting well done cards, excellent game mechanics, it's all rather good. I think they have a winner here. But you will have to pay for it, and it's online only. I don't know about other people, this is fun but not fun enough to spend my money on. Maybe when pricing comes out I will re-consider.
