Note: usually I don't post a review until I finish a game, this is not the case this time around.
Quickly: just doesn't have the same feel the old ones do, graphics not as nice and too damn hard.
Summary: this is a new Onimusha story set quite a few years after the events of the original Trillogy. You play the BlackOni a fortold warrior with unknown powers that could save or destroy the world. You face armies of Demon led by the local Warlord who has made a pact with the demons. The game pretty much starts with you trying to stop the Lord from having a Cherry Blossom festival (where the Cherry Treese are made up of haunted souls). There are 8 playable characters in this incaration and except for the opening mission you play the main character and one ally (which you sometimes choose and sometimes don't). Other additions are a item crafting system and the ability to go back to areas you have explored to find missed and previously unobtainable items.
The Good: the graphics are still some of the nicest on the PS2, though just not as nice as the previous games. The controls are simple enough with only one attack button, one block, a kick and sucking of souls. The characters are all rather unique and well written.
The Bad: the idea of going back to see more stuff is amlost cool. But what it basically means is every time you get a new character you end up going back to every level you have been on to see if that characters unique abilities will unlock a new area. The story is interesting and cool, but just not as gripping as the previous 3. I just can't seem to get into this one as much as the other ones.
The Ugly: too hard. Way too hard. Controller tossing hard. You wouldn't think a game with only 4 buttons to hit could be this near impossible. I have restarted levels 10 times and not gotten through them. This is for action gamers only. I may have enjoyed the game a lot more, perhaps even gotten into the story if I didn't have to keep re-trying missions over and over. The voice over can be in Japaneese which is awesome, except at the start of every mission there is a voice over while you are fighting that makes it impossible to read the subtitles, so instead if you want to know what's going on you have to listen to horrible dubbing.
Overall: it's still Onimusha and I suggest all fans of the series at least give this a rent. I didn't find it as cool or compelling as the original trillogy, but other might. Multiple characters means doing missions over again. The biggest thing that makes me not recommend this is the difficulty. It's just too hard for my tastes.
