Quickly: a fine game, but you better be ready for FPS style action.
Summary: an odd spin off of Final Fantasy VII (odd mainly since it's out so long after 7). The story is set after the events of 7 focusing on one of the optional characters from the original, Vincent Valentine. A typical FF plot involving love, guilt and the mystic stuff that makes up life/the world/the universe. Mainly a First Person Shooter with some platform elements and some shoot 'em up style minigames.
The Good: the graphics are pretty much as you would expect from SE and Final Fantasy, aka amazing. There are scenes in this that made my PS2 do things I didn't know it was capable off. Fairly simple controls. The Story is top notch and confusing as hell (to be expected from the series). The inclusion of other FF VII characters was great to see (The Cid arrival scene being the best). The RPG elements were a nice touch, and I liked the system where at the end of a level you were ranked and then you took that rank and traded it either for XP to level up your character, or Gil to buy/upgrade your weapons. There is a ton of variety to the gameplay which I expected to just be shoot this guy, then this one. It's mixed up in a good balance that makes you just want to keep playing.
The Bad: There is an aweful lot of dialogue and cut scenes for an action game. This didn't bug me, it felt like watching an Anime where I got to pick up the controller and take part now and then, but I am pretty sure all action fans will hate it. You spend more time watching this game then playing it. A bit short for a full price purchase to me. You can definately beat this in rental time (well at least the first time around, they do have multiple difficulties etc to add replay value).
The Ugly: this game has a jump button, I generally hate all games with a jump button. Luckily there weren't many scenes where I had to hit it at exactly the right time or die.
Overall: I was pleasantly supprised by this one. I played it for way to many hours straight yesterday and still didn't want to put it down. An odd direction for a FF game but a nice diversion. Keeps all the story and beauty of the FF series but tosses it in an action game. If you have any hand eye co-ordination I suggest giving this a rent. A purchase used perhaps, but full price, you will be done this one before the cheque clears.
