Played for about 3 days on the Wii
Summary: the latest Prince of Persia Game. This one continues the story after the Prince has left the Isle of Time and returned to Babylon. The Prince is on his way into the Babylonian port with his now saved Princess only to find the city in flames. In short order his boat is wrecked, his girl captured and him washed up ashore. Using a variety of weapons picked up off of his enemies and his keen acrobatic ability he sets off to save the Girl. Too late he watches her die and falls nearly to his death, only to wake up all Evil and Glowy with new abilities. Can he contain the demon within? Will he somehow use time to save the girl? Will you ever remember all the funky controls to pull off those amazing acrobatics?
The Good: Amazing looking moves. The amount of stuff you can pull off in this game is just amazing. The new moves are all rather cool, especially all the ones involving thrusting a weapon into the walls or buttons. The addition of being able to pick up your opponents weapons is rather cool. The whole Dark Prince thing is kinda cool, and his chain weapons defiantly add a new level to the platforming experience. The stealth kill system is a ton of fun. A lot of the battles can be 'avoided' by platforming around to come up behind or above an enemy, a few quick moves on the wii-mote and you finish the enemy off in one hit. It's very rewarding. The story seems pretty good, what I've seen of it. The sounds are great. The animations are amazing. Unfortunately the overall graphics are only okay.
The Bad: It's a platformer of the worst type. The good thing about this, is that you know that, that's kinda the point of Prince of Persia Isn't it. The problem is they have added so many 'new tricks' that it's hard to keep track in your head what button is for what. I often found myself hitting the jump button when I should have hit let go, or hitting let go when I should have flicked to Wiimote to stab a dagger into something. There are just too many rather complex moves. If it wasn't for the ability to turn back time, this would make the game unplayable and move this into the Ugly section. Thankfully 'Prince' knows what it is an allows for a few mistakes by the player. It's still frustrating at times.
The Ugly: yet another action game that uses the Wii-mote as a flick sensor for attacking. I'm getting rather sick of the flick your wrist instead of hitting a button gameplay on the Wii. I personally would prefer a button! The other uses of the Wii in this game are great, the insistence of the 'flick attack' generally just had me flailing around randomly in combat, sometimes to great effect, other times to not so great effect.
Overall: I rented this but got busy with other things so didn't give it as much attention as I would have liked. Playing through the first few hours though was more fun then I expected. The platforming was just starting to get frustrating when they gave me the ability to unwind time, so that was nice. The whole Dark prince thing was pretty cool (what's with the Dark thing this year, first Link, now this). Overall I think I will give this another rent before making my final judgment. I just have a feeling that this will go the same place the other Prince of Persia games have gone, into a level of platforming well above my ability and frustration limit. If you like the series thus far this seems to be an excellent next installment. It may play better on a system that doesn't require you to flick your controller though.
