Quickly
A karaoke game for the ps2.
Summary
Singstar rocks will seem somewhat familiar to those who have played other musi-tainement titles in the past - a scrolling note goes by onscreen, the player uses the controls to play that note, points are scored. Only this time there are no controls other than you own voice and singing ability. Sound frightening? Can't sing? It's OK. The game is actually fairly forgiving, even for montone off key singers like myself. The game comes with 2 microphones and a USB adapter, or can be purchased without the mics. There's different play modes - 2 people can sing at once, or swap off. Up to 8 can play in the "Pass the Mic" mode. Music videos play in the background as you sing along and you can replay and save your performances. You can also swap out the game disc and put in another disc from the Singstar series at any point. Singstar 80s, Singstar Pop and Singstar Amped are all out now. Apparently this has been out for ages in Europe and is pretty popular. It was released in the Us in the last year or so.
The Good
The fun factor is relitively high on this. The game concept is simple. Replay value is fairly high, though I probably won't play it solo. Some good (party) tunes are inculuded on the Rocks disc - Offspring, The Killers, The Police, Rolling Stones, White Stripes, Thin Lizzy etc. The microphones are pretty nice mics, they have a decent wieght to them and it doesn't feel like you're singing into a toy. The game seems to work ok with PS3 consoles.
The Bad
It's a stretch to call some of these songs "rock", Aretha Franklin and KT Tunstall (who?), and Gwen Stefani may be good but don't really rock to me. And DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince and Gloria Gaynor defiantley do not rock... ! Also it may take a while to learn some of the songs, there's a few I'm just not familiar with at all, and not knowing a) the lyrics to the song or b) the melody of the song means I probably won't be selecting those to songs very often.
The Ugly
The Stones track hangs up every time.
Overall
A pretty cool game. Compared to other musi-tainment titles that I've played, this is more fun than Donkey Konga, but not as fun as Guitar Hero. Hopefully they'll keep releasing new song discs for this series. I'm planning on trying Amped, which is supposedly more of a "modern rock" thing.
