After playing the second Guitar Hero for a solid year, I was starting to get tired of playing the limited selection of songs. So when GH 3 was announced with twice as many songs, I almost could not wait to get it. Yesterday I finally did and played the first 15 songs through, and here are my first impressions:
The song list (or at least the first 3 levels,) are largely from the 70's. Maybe the 80's Guitar Hero expansion used up the obvoius choices from that decade, and GH 2 was very grunge and hair-metal dominated. I'm inclined to think that they're increasingly orienting the GH line toward aging gamers, or maybe I'm just sensitive because I got it for my birthday.
Anyway, "Slow Ride" is an excellent song to start the game off, and I've been waiting for "Barracuda" ever since I heard of Guitar Hero.
After playing through the second level, Tom Morello (of Rage Against the Machine) came onstage and I had to battle his guitar style to go on to the encore where we played "Bulls On Parade." It was amusing but I beat him first time, and since I'm starting right on Hard difficulty I think he let me win. Unless he plays differently each time I battle him, the novelty will wear off quick and I'm just going to want to play real songs. I guess Slash (of Guns N Roses) awaits at a higher level since he's on the box cover and in the commercial.
I started at Hard difficulty to make the game last longer, but this edition seems less forgiving than GH 2, in which the first levels are pretty playable even on Hard. But this one seemed less forgiving to my syncopated sense of rhythm, and even though I haven't been booed off stage yet, it's a good thing no one else had to hear me play. That's not a complaint, I'm looking forward to rising to the challenge.
Talking about this game is just making me want to play, so I'm going...
To Rock!
