If you don't find a home group there are a couple of public play options locally. There is Dungeons and Dragons Encounters, which happens every Wednesday night at 7:00. These are short one encounter sessions that run in distinct seasons. A season just ended and the next one is starting next Wednesday. You can get a head start by going to World Wide D&D day this Saturday. Characters played Saturday will be legal for the next season.
The other option is playing in our RPGA games. We try to have these every other week but it doesn't always work out that way. These games are more like a traditional home game. You make a level one character and play through a module each session (which are about 5 hours long). You level up normally and get to carry over treasure from adventure to adventure (though there are some unique magic item rules). The cool part is that a RPGA character played here can be played in any RPGA even world wide.

Encounters averages 3 tables each with 4-6 players.
RPGA is two tables. The 1-4 is usually full at 6 players, the 4-7 we have been having trouble getting players for.
Overall it's also a great way to meet local players. I know I've 'inherited' some RPGA plyaers into my home games and I know others have started up games with people they have met at these events.
I actually don't know how many people to expect tomorrow. We have 3 DMs ready to run just in case. As it's a special event we often get outside players who don't show up to regular RPGA events.
