Bohnanza is a strategy card game designed by Uwe Rosenberg in which players get to be bean farmers. This quick to learn game can handle anywhere from two to seven players and a full game can be finished in about forty-five minutes. This makes Bohnanza a nice quick diversion allowing you to get in multiple games in one sitting or perfect for filling the gap between other games.
Bohnanza has one rule that sets it apart from nearly every other card games out there. Players cannot re-arrange their hands and must always play their cards in order. This means that player need to think ahead planting beans strategically and making shrewd trades with the other players in order to set their hands up for future turns. The goal is to collect more coins then your competitors by selling completed bean fields. The more beans that are in a field the more money you get. There are a wide variety of beans and each has its own rarity which determines how many of each type of bean there is in the deck as well as their value. Each player starts with two bean fields and every turn they must plant the first card in their hand into one of their fields. The trick here is that each field can only hold one type of bean. Fields can be sold off at any time and a player could be forced to sell off a field early in order to play their front card.
The simplicity of the rules belays the complexity of the strategy needed to win at Bohnanza. The basic mechanics are easy but making good trades and planning ahead adds a very solid level of complexity to the game itself. This makes this a great gateway game and one that is easily enjoyed by new players and hardcore board and card game fans.
The game comes in a nice compact box with amusing artwork that matches the cards. The cards themselves are nice and thick and have a matt linen finish. The art on the cards is rather amusing and adds to the light hearted feel of the game. The box includes a three slot card holder that does a passable job of keeping the cards neatly in the box. The instructions are very clear with plenty of examples.
The near perfect mix of simple to learn rules plus a satisfying level of strategy has made Bohnanza a local favourite. Nearly every local gaming event features at least one game of Bohnanza. Bohnanza will also be featured at the 2012 Great Canadian Board Game Blitz Windsor Championship being held on May 12th.
