Steam: Rails to Riches allows three to five players to take on the roles of Rail Barons competing to make the most profitable rail line. Steam is a very solid strategic game with rules that are fairly complex without being overbearing. Taking between two and four hours, depending on the number of players and the rules that are used, Steam makes for a great main game night game.
Steam: Rails to Riches is released in North America by Mayfair Games. It is designed by Martin Wallace and is the culmination of his classic railroad game series which includes Age of Steam and Railroad Tycoon. Steam is a re-implementation of these classics that is more refined, quicker, and more balanced.
Steam comes in a rather heavy and solid cardboard box with appealing cover art of a Train steaming across a rail bride. Inside the box is the rule book, a huge variety of hexagonal tiles, wooden cubes, wooden discs and a small selection of cardboard cards. All of the components are top notch. Well cut, well illustrated and well designed. Most impressive is the double sided game board giving you two maps to choose from: USA and Canada or Europe's lower Rhine and Ruhr region. The rules are full colour and include plenty of examples. Also included is a quick start card showing how to set up the game for your first play.
In Steam your goal is to deliver goods along a network of tracks, stations and cities. You build the tracks, improve your engines and even upgrade towns into new cities. Delivering the right goods to make the longest, most profitable, delivers is the key to success. As the game progresses players need to weight the need for more investment against scoring victory points to win the game. The included rules include two different ways to play: a very strategic and well balanced standard game and a shorter but, just as elegant, basic game.
Steam: Rails to Riches has become a local favourite in Windsor Ontario. You will see this one come out at nearly every Pints and Pawns and Games and Grub event. Steam is also being featured at the third annual Great Canadian Board Game Blitz Windsor Championship.
