Wizards has issued their July and Beyond release schedule for Dungeons and Dragons. Some interesting stuff on here, but what catches my eye the most a book called: Magic of Incarnum. This introdues a new magic system to the D&D universe. "Drawn from the ambient life energy that fills the multiverse, incarnum is the essence of all creatures. Incarnum flows as a deep blue, radiant mist, and those with the knowledge to harness this energy can shape it into objects of great power, called soulmelds. Using soulmelds crafted from raw incarnum, an adventurer opens up new avenues of ability never available before." The Weapons of Legacy also catchs my eye: "224-page hardcover that passes itself off as a book, but is actually a treasure trove of powerful magic items, all of which have interesting backgrounds and rich histories. (As attractive as toting around a +5 flaming sword might be, it's much more interesting to be the wielder of Durindana, the legendary longsword/reliquary consecrated to undead-hunting followers of Pelor." Great, more crap for the hordes of dungeon crawling imbiciles to horde and boast about when they feel left out from discussions of ACTUAL role-playing

Personally I think 3rd ed brings D&D up to snuff with most modern RPGs and there is something to be said for an old dungeon crawl and having more magic items then fit on one character sheet.
Some time going back to basics is fun, and being able to go back to basics with an up to date current system should be even more fun (should because I have yet to actually play/run a game, merely read the material).

Playing is overrated.. all those annoying players to mess up your grand plans.. I think all GM's would be happier if they just imagined it all to themselves while they read their book hordes like a dragon polishing gold
